What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a way of training your brain to regulate itself better. It uses sensors placed on your scalp to read your brainwave activity — nothing goes into your brain, they only listen.

At Peak Neuro, we use a system called NeurOptimal®. While you sit and listen to music for 33 minutes, the system reads your brain activity 256 times per second. When it detects your brain shifting into an unhelpful pattern, it creates a tiny pause in the music. Your brain notices, recalibrates, and over time gets better at catching itself.

Think of it like a mirror for your brain.

Is NeurOptimal® system safe?

Yes. NeurOptimal® system is completely non-invasive. The sensors only read electrical signals from your brain. Nothing is sent into your brain at any point. The system is classified as a General Wellness Device by the FDA.

Some people feel a bit tired after their first few sessions, which is normal. Most say they sleep better that night. There are no known negative side effects.

Is it safe for children?

Absolutely. NeurOptimal® is safe for children aged 5 and up. Kids often find the sessions relaxing. They just sit and listen to music. Parents commonly report improved focus, better emotional regulation, more confidence, and calmer behaviour after consistent training.

How is this different from meditation or therapy?

Meditation asks you to actively regulate your mind which is hard when your brain is already overwhelmed. Therapy works through conscious understanding and conversation.

Neurofeedback works at a different level. It trains your nervous system directly, below conscious awareness. You don’t need to concentrate, think about anything, or do anything at all. You just sit, listen to music, and your brain does the work.

Many people use neurofeedback alongside therapy and meditation and find it makes both more effective.

Why haven’t I heard of Neurofeedback before?

Neurofeedback has been around for decades, but it’s only recently become accessible for home use. Traditionally, you’d need to visit a clinic and pay $80–$150 per session, which put it out of reach for most people.

Home rental systems like ours have changed that. You get the same technology used by clinicians, delivered to your door, at a fraction of the cost.

What makes NeurOptimal® different from other Neurofeedback systems?

Most Neurofeedback systems require a clinician to set specific targets for your brain essentially telling it what to do. NeurOptimal® doesn’t work that way. It simply shows your brain what it’s doing in real time and lets it decide how to respond.

This means there’s no diagnosis needed, no protocols to follow, and no risk of pushing your brain in the wrong direction. It’s why NeurOptimal® is safe enough for home use without clinical supervision.

What's the difference between Neurofeedback and NeurOptimal®?

Neurofeedback is the general term for any type of brain training that uses real-time feedback from your brainwave activity. There are many different neurofeedback systems out there, and they don't all work the same way.

NeurOptimal® is the specific system we use at Peak Neuro. Unlike most neurofeedback systems which require a trained clinician to assess your brain and set targets for it. NeurOptimal® is designed to let your brain do the work itself. It simply mirrors your brain activity back to you through the music, and your brain self-corrects naturally.

That's what makes it safe and simple enough to use at home without supervision. You're not pushing your brain in any direction. You're just giving it better information about what it's already doing.

What happens during a session?

You sit somewhere comfortable, attach two small sensors to your scalp and three clips to your ears using conductive paste (we provide everything). Put on the included wired headphones, and listen to music for 33 minutes.

That’s it. You can close your eyes, read a book, scroll your phone (on mute), or even doze off. The system does all the work in the background.

How quickly will I notice changes?

Most people notice sleep improvements first. Often within the first week or two. After that, clients commonly report feeling calmer, less reactive, and more focused.

Everyone’s brain is different, so the timeline varies. We give you a progress checklist to track changes every 8–10 sessions, which helps you spot improvements you might not notice day to day.

How many sessions do I need?

There’s no fixed number. It depends on what you’re working on and how your brain responds. Most clients start noticing meaningful changes after 10–15 sessions, with the best results coming from 20–40 sessions over 2–3 months.

We recommend starting with 3 sessions per week. We’ll help you figure out a schedule that works during your free consult.

Do the results last?

Yes, the changes neurofeedback brings are long-lasting because you’re training your brain, not just managing symptoms. Think of it like fitness: once you’ve built the strength, it doesn’t disappear overnight.

Some people do a short “top-up” rental once or twice a year. Others find the changes stick without any follow-up. It varies from person to person.

Can I use medication while doing Neurofeedback?
Yes. Many of our clients train while on medication. Neurofeedback and medication work differently. Medication manages symptoms chemically, while neurofeedback trains your brain to regulate itself.

Important: If you’re on prescription medication, please let your prescribing doctor know you’re doing neurofeedback training. As your brain starts functioning more efficiently, your medication needs may change.

Who shouldn’t use Neurofeedback?

NeurOptimal® is safe for most people, but we recommend chatting with us first if you have active epilepsy or a seizure disorder, have an implanted device near the sensor placement area, or are under 5 years old.

If you’re unsure, book a free 15-minute consult and we’ll talk it through honestly.

No. You will be up and running right from your first session. The sensors clip on, you apply a small amount of paste, press play, and you’re training. We walk you through setup on a call before your first session.

How often should I train?

We recommend 3 sessions per week per person. You can train daily if you like, it’s completely safe. The minimum we suggest is twice per week. Consistency matters more than intensity.

Do I need to watch the screen?

No. The training works through the audio. You can read, scroll your phone (on mute), meditate, close your eyes, or fall asleep. Some people watch the visual display, but it’s completely optional.

What if a sensor falls off?

Just pop it back into place. If it’s been off for more than two minutes, restart the session. If training a young child, check the sensor placement a couple of times during the session.

Do I need internet access?

Yes, the system needs internet for software updates. Standard home Wi-Fi is fine. If you don’t have internet at home, let us know before renting and we’ll work out a solution.
